Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is for you if you already work as a communication support worker (CSW) or as a specialist notetaker and want to improve your ability to provide support for D/deaf learners with a range of specific learning needs, such as autism an other learning difficulties and disabilities. You will learn how to be fully flexible and to cope well in potentially challenging in-class support situations. You will be able to draw on the experience of tutors who are accustomed to working in class and providing 1:1 support for D/deaf students who have a variety of additional needs.

What topics will we cover?

You will learn about common learning difficulties and needs that may affect the students you support, Support strategies that can be employed will be covered as well as other issues that CSWs and notetakers often need to be aware of, which are not part of the normal CSW role. Topics covered will include: working with students with low level language; supporting learners with processing difficulties; issues relating to work with learners with mental and emotional issues; and support strategies for specific difficulties such as autism, dyslexia and Usher Syndrome.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Explain the main aspects of additional needs which may affect learners and identify appropriate support strategies.
- Adjust your communication so that you can meet the needs of students with low level language skills and help
them to develop their language further, if appropriate.
- Assist a mainstream tutor who is teaching a class which includes a D/deaf learner with additional needs, so that
the tutor can understand how these needs may affect the learning experience. You will learn how you can work
together to optimise this experience.
- Recognise the boundaries of your role and when to seek additional support.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for anyone working with D/deaf learners in the role of a CSW or notetaker, where the level of the course is entry level, or where the learners are being supported on courses designed for people with learning difficulties or other needs.

Although there are no set entry requirements, you will be likely to find the course more interesting if you have BSL skills of at least level 2 as well as literacy skills of at least level 2. You will also need literacy skills of level 2 in order to read and explain texts used with learners. You will also find it helpful to take brief notes during the day.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching methods will include a variety of class and small group discussion, practice tasks, presentations, case studies, demonstrations and group work.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no further costs, although pen and paper for taking notes may be useful.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be an opportunity for further discussion with the tutors at the end of the day.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
