What is the course about?

Improving the support you give when working as a CSW on visual arts courses (art foundation, graphics, media, etc) by giving you a basic understanding of the language of art, basic art concepts, terminology and history and then exploring how to translate art classes and feedback tutorials into clear visual BSL. This is especially important as many deaf learners struggle to understand new concepts and abstract ideas if they are not clearly expressed and demonstrated. There will be some emphasis on using the visuality of BSL make BSL translation easier to understand and the need to ‘create’ new signs to suit an art context as.

What topics will we cover?

Good interpretation is strongly linked to having a good understanding of the subject being discussed so the day will begin with discussion of commonly used art terms, the language used by art tutors in lectures and assignment briefs, and key art concepts, linking these with accepted signs where possible. You will then progress to exploring how to effectively translate art class content and discussion of art into understandable BSL.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand and explain key art terminology in English and BSL, using commonly accepted signs where possible.
- Understand the issues students may often have when learning new concepts and abstract ideas. Consider ways to aid students with this during support and also how to explain learner needs to class tutors.
- Cope with practical issues that may arise during an art booking, such as interpreting for visual demonstrations, lectures with slide presentations and classroom set up.
- Understand discussion surrounding art based assignment briefs, crit sessions and tutorial feedback sessions.
- Explore ways to make BSL more visual when describing art subjects and what to do if you don’t know ‘the sign’.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for anyone working with d/Deaf learners in the role of a CSW, especially if working in art based subjects. You are not expected to have an in-depth knowledge of art but an interest in art will make the day more enjoyable for you.

Although there are no set entry requirements you will be expected to have signing skills of at least BSL level 2 and to be able to read and explain texts and assignments. You will also find it helpful to take brief notes during the day.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching methods will include a variety of class and small group discussion, practice tasks, presentations, demonstrations and group work.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no further costs, although pen and paper for taking notes may be useful.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be an opportunity for further discussion with the tutors at the end of the day.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
