Course outline

What is the course about?

A short introduction to the principles and techniques of Brecht and the epic theatre tradition.

What topics will we cover?

We will focus on the process of shaping and framing story and the development of the social dimension of characters and action. We will look at the role of music, entertainment, and fun, and explore the Brechtian principles and techniques of the Fabel, Gestus, the epic, defamiliarisation, and the “not/but” in acting.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Begin to use a Brechtian methodology to improve the clarity of your story-telling (whether as an actor, director, or writer)
Broaden the range of artistic means available to you in your practical work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Some acting experience is necessary and students should be familiar with the principles of psychological realism (Stanislavski).
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Communicate clearly in discussion and drama practice.
• Read and respond to a variety of texts.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Take notes.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is taught through a combination of practical exercises, the analysis and development of text, and discussion. You will work alone, in pairs, and in groups, according to the exercise.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A notebook, pen, and comfortable clothing.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
