Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is designed to introduce you to the art and skills of good sight-reading. It is especially for those who have little experience of sight-reading or who have tried it but feel they would like to start from scratch.

Sight-reading is taking a piece of text and bringing it off the page without necessarily having had much time to go over or rehearse it.

What topics will we cover?

Cold readings, prepared readings, monologues and duologues.
We will look at the basic sight-reading tools such as the four part sequence of SEE IT, THINK IT, FEEL IT, SAY IT and apply this to (initially) short sentences of no more than three words. As we go along, this will be applied to longer sentences and finally monologues and duologues. We will look at techniques for keeping the focus and dealing with nerves that make the text into a complex blur floating in front of you! We will also discover ways of keeping your place in the text and making relationship with the people in the scene even when you are doing a cold reading.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Pick up a piece of text and bring it off the page with feeling and characterisation and relationship to the other person in the scene.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginner's course. However, those who have looked at sight-reading before but would like to improve their confidence are also welcome.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Communicate clearly in discussion and drama practice.
• Read and respond to a variety of text.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Take notes.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Large groups, small groups, pairs and one to one.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Through one to one and group feedback, you will also know by the freedom you will experience as you become less tied to, or afraid of, the text.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
