Course outline

What is the course about?

Discovering ways to tackle emotionally demanding texts.
Unlocking your own emotional power.
Involving the body and the voice in expressing big emotions.
Identifying blocks and releasing them.

What topics will we cover?

Spontaneity, being present, physical and vocal release, approaches to text - duologues and scenework, challenging yourself to take emotional risks.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Perform a text with a broad and authentic range of emotions.
• Tackle emotionally demanding roles.
• Identify and employ a wide range of approaches to text work.
• Accurately self assess blocks and how to release them.
• Perform with vocal, physical and emotional confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For those with some experience, not suitable for beginners. A willingness to take risks is essential.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen actively and communicate clearly.
• Work collaboratively
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and analyse scripts to find meaning and clarity.
• Take notes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught practically and experientially through a mixture of group and solo work, including improvisation, text, physical and vocal work. A variety of practices will be covered including Stanislavski, Meisner, Boal and Hagen.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to source texts. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will be encouraged to self-assess and set achievable goals for yourself with each piece of work. You will be encouraged to offer supportive and constructive criticism to each other to develop your awareness of self and others.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
