Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is for you to gain a further understanding of directing different plays.

What topics will we cover?

We will cover areas including blocking a play, motivation of character, breaking down a text, how to communicate your ideas, time management within a rehearsal, working with actors as well as discovering new playwrights.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Communicate effectively with actors.
Be more confident of your director's voice.
Have a clear understanding of shaping a play.
Understand your style as a director.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need some acting experience and an interest in theatre.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen actively and communicate clearly.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and analyse scripts to find meaning and clarity.
• Take notes.
• Use numbers to recognise rhythm.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be given feedback each class, after your direction. You will be emailed the scene you have to prepare for the following class and are expected to have a structure for your directing that evening.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will have to purchase the plays we will be working on.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
