Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is about the link between the actor’s mind, body and surrounding world. Often actors feel they have prepared well and are thinking the right thoughts, yet those feelings and thoughts do not transmit creatively to the audience. We will look at exercises and improvisations that help strengthen connections within the actor, and between the actor and the external world. These exercises will also provide a starting point for more creative personal work.

What topics will we cover?

We will use a range of techniques including a traditional naturalistic sensory-based approach to constructing scene and character. We will then progress towards more experimental dance-based work exploring time, space and less formal modes of expression.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Recognise and dispel the physical blocks / tension that interfere with your expression in performance
- Build a creative tool-kit allowing you to begin your own creative work around an existing text
- Use a sensory / sensual naturalistic approach to build awareness of your own body
- Recognise, and enjoy exploring, modes of performance other than the traditional naturalistic approach
- Enjoy a greater sense of your expressive capacity as a performer, with increased flexibility.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an intensive, advanced short course aimed at graduates and professional actors. You need performance experience.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
•Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
•Take part in class discussions.
•Read a script and/or related text.
•Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You’ll be taught collaboratively by a professional director, choreographer and acting coach. The work will be practical and assessed in the moment. You’ll be given constant constructive verbal feedback and lots of inspiring tools to help extend your own creative work. There will be preparation between sessions including scene rehearsal, background research and the creation of your own performance composition.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You need clothes you can move in, a notebook and pen. Handouts will be provided – you may purchase full source texts at your own discretion.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
