Course outline

What is the course about?

To examine various aspects of impro, discover how to develop comedy characters, raising the stakes and comedic structure, one particularly useful skill we will develop is how to make others appear funny.

What topics will we cover?

All basic impro’ components will be covered, ranging from short, quick fire scenes to extended narratives. Specific areas covered will include improvising at auditions and using impro’ as a writing tool.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Understand the mechanics of beginning a scene, making it interesting and finding an ending.
Be confident enough to create an extremely funny scene from nothing.
Perform impro scenes with absolutely no fear.
Be able to set up your own impro troop.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for people who have some impro’ or acting experience.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen actively and communicate clearly.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and analyse scripts to find meaning and clarity.
• Take notes.
• Use numbers to recognise rhythm.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group work and continuous performance.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Though by no means essential, participants may benefit from going to see a comedy impro’ show, such as ‘The Comedy Store Players’ or ‘Sprout’.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Performance impro sketches.
Performance impro the play.
Comedy writing for T.V.
Stand-up Comedy.
Having a background in impro’ would give any student a massive head start in the stand-up comedy. Advice will also be given on setting up an impro troop.
