Course outline

What is the course about?

Improving the quality of your voice and speech use. This does not include your accent!

What topics will we cover?

BODY – Relaxation, conscious muscle release, posture and alignment;
BREATH – breath placement, management and support;
VOICING – laryngeal tone, pitch use;
RESONANCE – space and vibration in the body;
ARTICULATION – the process of shaping speech.
.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Demonstrate more confidence in your voice and how you use it.
Display an awareness of the technique of supporting your voice and managing your breath.
Use simple exercises to continue your vocal development beyond the course.
.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For any non-native speaker of English who would like to be more confident with their voice; beginners are welcome.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently.
• Communicate in group situations.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and respond to a range of texts.
• Take course notes for your own use.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The work is mostly practical, taught through exercises for individuals, partners, small groups and the whole group. Students will be asked to repeat some exercises at home and record their experience on a simple form. At times individuals will present to the group.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Loose, comfortable clothing, which in particular does not restrict the belly, abdomen or the movement of the legs. This does not include jeans!
A book or two, measuring the width of three fingers, and a belt.
.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your progress will be regularly assessed and monitored by your tutor, taking into account class work and homework where appropriate. The tutor will record your progress and provide informal regular feedback throughout the course. Also, as students acquire their own technique they will quickly become able to assess their own voice production, and to give constructive feedback to their peers. At the end of your course you will be asked to self-assess your own progress and achievement against the course objectives above. The tutor will endorse your assessment, which will be formally recorded on a standard form (the Statement of Learning).

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
