» Find another course in Drama, dance and speech» Search all coursesThis course is suitable for people new to jazz dance or to dance in general who are wishing to develop new dance skills and confidence with their movement. The aim of the course is to provide a fun and supportive practical session in which you can improve your awareness and skill with regard to how to use dance action in response to jazz, soul and rhythm & blues music. Through practising structured dance exercises - including those that focus on isolation of given parts of the body, rhythmic syncopation and stylisation of gesture and movement to suit different expressive qualities (e.g. enthusiastic and up-beat or sultry and smooth) - we will work to achieve a greater all-round awareness of the moving body.
The course starts with a focus on posture. As we progress through structured exercises and sequences, we will consider the core principles of balance, co-ordination, flexibility, strength and stamina within the context of a jazz dance style.
1. Have a greater appreciation of dance and music
2. Have improved co-ordination, flexibility, strength and stamina
3. Perform a jazz dance routine.
The course is suitable for those new to dance and for those with some experience who wish to extend their range in the context of a new and fun practical dance setting.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.
You will learn through practical class work as you perform planned and sequenced exercise that builds competency across the duration of the course. In addition, demonstration, guidance and verbal feedback from the tutor will be given and we will also use peer interaction and self-assessment as we practise given exercises and sequences.
You need to bring dance or sportswear, jazz shoes (note: bare feet permitted).
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Feedback will cover posture, co-ordination, balance, strength and stamina. Furthermore, you will be given guidance around the performance elements of musicality, energy, focus and jazz dance style.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
