Course outline

What is the course about?

Street Dance is rooted in a number of urban dance styles encompassing styles such as locking, popping and breakin'. However, whilst your class may include these styles it's unlikely to be based around that one style for the whole class. The class will use popular music, often music seen in the charts. This can include pop, r&b and hip-hop as well as other styles of music.

What topics will we cover?

Learn cool and funky moves. Develop rhythm and co-ordination. Learn to pick up choreography and street dance techniques. Some floor work may be used in class.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Demonstrate basic warm up moves and street dance techniques
Use increased co-ordination and memory skills
Perform a street dance routine.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for beginners who wish to extend their range and those who are new to dance, however a good level of fitness is required. Some floor work may be used in the class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught together in a group, with individual pieces being worked on in front of the group so that you learn from each other’s performances as well as your own. This is a fun dance class that is guaranteed to get your energy pumping.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please wear clothing that does not restrict your movement and allows you to adapt to changes in your body temperature. Tights, leotard or clothing that does not restrict movement will allow your tutor to see your work more clearly.
The exercises are best undertaken in jazz shoes or trainers. Jock straps should be worn by men. Students to tie their hair back if it is long for their own safety and comfort and remove jewelry for comfort and health and safety.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
