Course outline

What is the course about?

This course offers a thorough practical introduction to Flamenco dance, in a fun and lively atmosphere, with live guitar accompaniment.

What topics will we cover?

Physical warm-up / cool-down
Flamenco posture and style
Basic footwork combinations
Basic co-ordination of arms / feet / head / wrists / turns
Development of stamina
The origins of Flamenco, its history and multi-cultural roots.
Tuning into Flamenco music with 'palmas' - rhythmic hand-clapping
Choreography and complete short dances
End of term presentations and public performance opportunities.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Embody the fundamental Flamenco dance posture and style
Accurately demonstrate a selection of basic footwork combinations
Demonstrate basic co-ordination of arms / feet / head / wrists / turns
Demonstrate basic understanding of the origins of Flamenco and its historical and cultural context
Distinguish the compas (the rhythmic pulse, the beat) of Flamenco and demonstrate this by accompanying the music / dance with appropriate basic palmas
Perform a selection of short basic choreographies and dances.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Term 1: Absolute Beginner.
Term 2: Fast Beginner.
Term 3: Lower Elementary.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In this practical and dynamic class, students will be taught Flamenco dance.
- through explanation, demonstration, correction, copying, repetition, revision and practising to live and recorded Flamenco music.
- through whole group work / small groups / pair work in class to consolidate learning.
- through support in taking notes, so as to record learning and to enable students to practise / revise steps between classes (and complete written homework.
- through hand-out / copies of written material to support practical learning.
- through optional visits to see recommended Flamenco performances in the London area.
- through optional viewing of Flamenco videos / DVDs in class / at home.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Notebook (optional)
Women: Flamenco dance shoes - tutor will provide information on shops / websites etc. Alternatively, strong court shoes with small strong heel - NO stilettos, sandals, platforms or trainers. Leotards / T-shirts recommended - NO baggy sweatshirts etc. Comfortable trousers initially, Flamenco / flared skirts by term 2.
Men: Flamenco boots - tutor will provide information on shops / websites etc. Alternatively, boots with Cuban heel or leather-soled shoes with slight heel - NO trainers. Comfortable trousers and a waistcoat.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Assessment from the tutor will be in the form of verbal feedback, physical mirroring, and Q&A and quizzes. There will also be many opportunities for peer assessment.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. The tutor welcomes verbal feedback and/or questions from the students, at any time informally during the sessions (or, time allowing, before or after). The tutor will also invite you to complete an informal mid-course evaluation form.
