A friendly, intensive class, with live guitar accompaniment, that focuses on the confident execution of flamenco dance with pleasure, passion and panache! There will also be performance opportunities. You should have danced Flamenco for a year and have completed either stage 1 or equivalent.

Course outline

What is the course about?

Move beyond the basic Flamenco steps you mastered in the first levels. This friendly and intensive class is accompanied by live flamenco guitar and you will learn more complex steps, combinations and dances.

What topics will we cover?

- Physical warm-up / cool-down
- Flamenco posture and style
- Footwork combinations
- Co-ordination of arms / feet / head / wrists / forward turns / back turns / castanets / fans
- Development of stamina
- Tuning into Flamenco music with palmas - rhythmic hand-clapping
- Choreography and complete dances
- Revision of dances previously learnt at level 1
There will be end of term presentations and public performance opportunities.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

1. - Consistently embody Flamenco dance posture and style with ease and panache
2. - Accurately demonstrate a selection of elementary level footwork combinations
3. - Accurately demonstrate co-ordination of arms / feet / head / wrists
4. - Demonstrate back turns and forward turns combined with a variety of arm positions
5. - Demonstrate basic use of castanets and fans, co-ordinated with a variety of steps and arm movements
6 - Accurately and confidently distinguish the compas of a variety of Flamenco palos and demonstrate this by accompanying the music and dance with appropriate complex palmas
7. - Perform a selection of elementary level choreographies and dances.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Upper elementary. It is for anyone who has had a minimum of one year / 60hrs Flamenco dance experience.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions.
• Use numbers to recognise musical phrasing within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In this practical and dynamic class, students will be taught Flamenco dance
- through explanation, demonstration, copying, repetition, revision and practising to live and recorded Flamenco music
- through whole group work / small groups / pair work in class to consolidate learning
- through support in taking notes, so as to record learning and to enable students to practise / revise steps between classes (optional)
- through hand-out / copies of written material to support practical learning

There will be optional visits to see recommended Flamenco performances in the London area and viewing of Flamenco videos / DVDs inn class / at home.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The tutor will provide information on shops / websites where you can get the appropriate Flamenco dance accessories:
Women: Flamenco dance shoes; leotards / T-shirts recommended - NO baggy sweatshirts, jeans etc. Flamenco skirts, Cordoba hat, castanets and Flamenco fan.
Men: Flamenco dance boots; waistcoat, Cordoba hat and castanets.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will receive continual assessment from the tutor throughout the course, via verbal feedback, physical mirroring, Q&A, quizzes and occasional homework assignments. There will also be many opportunities for self-assessment and peer assessment.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses. The tutor welcomes verbal feedback and/or questions from the students, at any time informally during the sessions (or, time allowing, before or after class, or via e-mail). The tutor will also invite you to complete an informal mid-course evaluation form.

Flamenco Andalucia - level 2: every year, there will be different dances and choreographies taught, with further performance opportunities offered.
