Lyrical jazz

A good ballet-based technique is an essential component of this intermediate jazz style of dance. The lyrical choreography is often peppered with intentionally pedestrian moves, amid the more challenging movements, to create a simultaneously organic and dramatic feel.

Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a practical course for intermediate dancers focusing on strong technique and performance, which looks at improving your existing dance technique and vocabulary. As a dance form, lyrical work is based around choreography and the interpretation of the music; though technique is crucial, spirit generally tells where the dance will go. Using a carefully conducted approach you will aim to improve and hone your existing skills and develop new ones, benefitting from greater confidence and ability.

What topics will we cover?

This is a practical and dynamic class combining jazz and ballet in a lyrical form of jazz dance. Each lesson will start with a full body group warm-up, followed by corner to corner/co-ordination/technical exercises. A choreographed routine, which may involve floor work, and a chance at the end of the lesson to dance your routine whilst the teacher watches, coaches and comments.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Demonstrate an increased understanding of the lyrical jazz style.
Identify greater awareness of placement, co-ordination, position in dance and floor work.
Use musicality, fluidity and technique with greater effect.
Demonstrate performance skills and ability.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an intermediate course aimed at those students with some prior experience through the completion of one years training in ballet and/or jazz techniques. There may be an element of floor work however adaptations can be made. The work is made accessible through careful explanation and demonstration. Good general fitness is required.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
Follow spoken instructions.
Use numbers to recognise musical phrasing within dance.
Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The class is tutor led. You will be taught through explanation, demonstration, correction and copying. You will be encouraged to work in your own time to perfect the work but there is no formal requirement to do so.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please wear clothing that does not restrict your movement and allows you to adapt to changes in your body temperature. Tights, leotard or clothing that does not restrict movement will allow your tutor to see your work more clearly. Jazz shoes/sneakers or similar, no outdoor shoes please. Jock straps should be worn by men. Students to tie their hair back if it is long for their own safety and comfort. Jewellery should be removed at the start of the class. There may be some floor work students may wish to bring knee pads to protect themselves.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
