Course outline

What is the course about?

In flamenco dance, it’s not enough to perform the steps: flamenco demands that we offer our authentic selves to our audience, with generosity and courage. This short, intensive intermediate-level course will develop your performance skills, so that you can express your true feelings as you dance flamenco, in a group and solo, with confidence and panache.

What topics will we cover?

You will learn performance skills applicable to any flamenco choreography:
- tuning into flamenco 'compás’ with ‘palmas’
- the essential (yet often neglected) art of 'jaleos'
- short dance sequences in 'jondo' and 'chico' style
- sharing your favourite flamenco music track, and improvising to it
- communication with guitarist and singer
- solo performance
- your flamenco persona
- your relationship with your audience
- expression: how to let your face and body show what you're feeling when you dance.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- perform a short expressive flamenco dance (solo) sequence
- communicate clearly with ‘palmeros’, ‘cantaor’ and ‘tocaor’
- support fellow dancers with appropriate ‘palmas’ and ‘jaleos’
- improvise a short dance sequence (solo, in your flamenco ‘persona’) with confidence and panache.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Intermediate: for anyone who has either completed Flamenco Andalucia level 2 at City Lit
OR
- had a minimum of two years (approximately 120 hours) or flamenco dance training elsewhere.

In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions.
• Use numbers to recognise musical phrasing within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In this practical and dynamic class, you will be taught flamenco dance via:
- tutor &and peer demonstration, observation, feedback and collaboration
- whole group work / small groups / pair work into consolidate learning
- solo performance

You will have support in taking notes, so as to record learning and to enable you to practise between classes, and will have hand-outs / copies of written material to support practical learning.

There will be optional visits to see recommended flamenco performances in the London area, and optional viewing of flamenco videos / DVDs in class or at home.

Work outside of class will include home practice, some homework and some personal research.

There will be informal end-of-course presentations, public performance opportunities with 'Flamenco Con Gusto'.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a notebook, pen and folder, and wear standard flamenco shoes / boots and practice skirt etc.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
