Course outline

What is the course about?

This improvers' course will develop your tap knowledge and extend your expertise and skill through learning challenging but also fun tap moves. You will increase your vocabulary of steps, timesteps and sequences and will learn a progressive routine that will encourage you to perform with an emphasis on rhythm and syncopation.

What topics will we cover?

You will develop your tap knowledge and improve your expertise and skill through learning challenging but also fun tapmoves that will increase your vocabulary of steps, timesteps and sequences. You will also learn a progressive routine that will encourage you to perform with an emphasis on rhythm and syncopation yet with regard to your own personal style.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Perform various progressive tap moves, steps and sequences.
Perform several progressive time-steps.
Use your body in a creative way when dancing.
Appreciate latin/waltz and other rhythmic styles.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for students who have completed American Tap Stage 1A or the Tap Workshop, or for those with confident tap expertise.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions.
• Use numbers to recognise musical phrasing within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In a group and individually.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

It is essential to have good shoes and tap shoes are necessary for this class. Having the correct shoes can really improve your technique and give you a much better feeling for the style of dance. The tap shoes should be fitted with tap plates using screw fittings (no rivets). Specialised stockists such as Gamba, Freed and Dancia, which have outlets in and around Covent Garden can provide appropriate footwear. Clothing should be comfortable and loose.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Students are assessed at each lesson individually and as a group. Assessment is based on your ability to complete the lesson plan of the day (i.e. to perform given steps and each new sequence of the routine). Flair, style and confidence are assessed with performance in mind.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
