This course is aimed at those seriously considering the theatre or wishing to renew their technique. We will cover vocal, physical and improvisation exercises and will practise with audition pieces. Not open to students on the Foundation or Access courses.

Course outline

What is the course about?

Developing an in-depth approach to acting.
Receiving individual advice on contrasting audition pieces.
Receiving practical advice for drama school and job auditions.

What topics will we cover?

Vocal, physical and mental flexibility, using group and solo vocal, physical and improvisation exercises. Audition speeches.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Recognise the difference between acting on the surface and acting with truth.
Perform in some depth two contrasting audition pieces.
Understand the theme, story and structure of your speeches.
Apply a set of exercises to create a believable character.
Work collaboratively and to trust oneself and others in the acting situation.
Use constructive feedback to identify areas that need attention.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Some acting training and experience required, as well as a genuine desire to explore the possibility of seriously training as an actor.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Communicate clearly in discussion and drama practice.
• Read and respond to a variety of text.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Take notes.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Practical individual, group and pair work. You will need to prepare audition speeches and there will be some other homework.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to find suitable audition pieces by Shakespeare and a modern writer, and to bring a pen and paper.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be observation of performance, oral self-assessment and supportive group assessment.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
