There will be some discussion of cabaret and its place among the performing arts, but mostly this will be a practical course to help you develop your cabaret skills and understand how it could work for you.
We will discuss how to discover and explore your own style; choose material; decide presentation; and develop a rapport with the audience. We will also explore how the cabaret experience differs from other forms of theatre.
Differentiate between cabaret and other forms of theatre
Describe some of the challenges cabaret presents in performance
Assemble a short (5 minutes or less) cabaret act
Find ways to interact with an audience.
This course is accessible to all levels, but would especially benefit those with a desire to perform. Singing is just one of the ways you can perform in cabaret, so if you feel you have another skill, whether it’s magic, dance, burlesque, or simply telling a good story, bring it along.
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.
You will be taught as a whole group, in smaller groups and in pairs, with frequent opportunities to perform to the rest of the class. You will also be able to work on pieces between the two weeks, but this will not be compulsory.
No, but you are welcome to bring along sheet music, costume or props for the second week. Piano accompaniment will be provided for those that need it.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
