This is an introductory course for actors of all levels, with or without prior singing experience, who wish to improve their abilities.
Technique and breathing/support. We will cover a repertoire of songs from various periods.
Apply acting techniques to different song genres
Demonstrate a range of vocal techniques and recognise qualities in your voice that you can relate to specific songs
Describe challenges arising from theatrical vocal performances, both general and specific to each genre.
The class is open to all levels but you should be able to learn and sing a tune and words either from repetition or from the page.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen actively and communicate clearly.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and analyse scripts to find meaning and clarity.
• Take notes.
• Use numbers to recognise rhythm.
You will be taught as a whole group, in smaller groups and in pairs, with frequent opportunities to perform to the rest of the class so that you learn from each other’s performances as well as your own. Although one of the topics is song and dance, the class will focus on the vocal techniques needed while moving around. Between classes it will be suggested you work on your songs and research the next week’s topic, but this will be at your own discretion.
Sheet music and lyrics can be provided, but you will be encouraged to source songs that are appropriate for your own voice. It’s also advisable you wear comfortable clothing and flat shoes.
