Course outline

What is the course about?

Create an exciting interactive animation for performance/installation work using the latest features of professional animation packages. This experimental course for actors and animators leads to a live performance. No previous experience necessary.

What topics will we cover?

Session1: view and discuss examples of work. Stop frame animation exercise using actors as animation models to explore frames and timing.
Actors and animators work together in devising narrative, characters and movements. Create rough storyboard.
Film and photograph movements of actors as animation research
Session 2: intro to preparing images in photoshop and importing into After Effects. Intro to animating transformations in After Effects.
Importing moving images into After Effects and using them as movement research for animation of cut outs.
Session 3: Using the puppet tool in After Effects to create movement within still images
Session 4: Export movies and practice scrubbing on timeline to live voice and actor interaction.
Afternoon performance incorporating actors, animated cut outs and live projection.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- An understanding of animating movement, character and emotion
- An understanding of how to prepare images for use in After effects
- An understanding of how to transform layers in After effects
- An understanding of the use of the puppet pin tool in After effects
- The ability to work with actors and direct movement suitable for animation.
- The ability to create and realise storyboards
- The ability to project work live and interactively.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations, individual assistance and notes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
