Course outline

What is the course about?

A two-day encounter with acting.

What topics will we cover?

Being on stage. Basic acting principals, including Stanislavski. Physical work. Theatre games. Looking at things that get in the way of successful communication and finding methods to overcome them. Devising a piece to perform within set parameters and performing it in front of the class. Improvisation and introduction to character work. Work on the concept of status.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Identify 'blocks' and know how to work with them.
Identify and play action.
Come on stage and be in the moment.
Drop your guard and work more openly and freely with other actors.
Perform an improvisation.
Perform a devised piece in front of an audience.
Understand and have language for the principles of naturalistic acting.
Understand how 'status' can inform acting choices.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for beginners.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Take part in class discussions.
• Read a script and/or related text.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be given lots of different games and exercises to perform with the group. The course is highly structured to give you maximum practical experience with clear learning goals explained at every stage. You will learn from doing and from observing each other. You will be acting and observing all day.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please come wearing loose clothing suitable for exercise and be prepared to work barefoot or bring soft indoor shoes.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Students will be encouraged to give and receive feedback to each other.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
