Course outline

What is the course about?

Play is spontaneous, enjoyable and full of surprises. It leads to enjoyment and shared laughter. In this workshop we will look at how the Clown can still play when the usual setbacks mount up to become truly tragic. By accepting the tragic, the Clown finds truthful ways to play with great emotions but not to undermine them.

What topics will we cover?

The themes will be: play, co-operation, status, simplicity, and vulnerability. We will apply these to a variety of situations that involve loss or rejection. The clown’s response can invoke laughter, sympathy, tears or wonder – or all four at the same time! There will be particular focus upon work with the red nose.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Be relaxed when playing with tragic sitautions.
Be courageous enough to continue playing and find games when faced with tragic circumstances.
Be able to be simple and honest on stage.
Develop a strong, simple relationship with other performers and the audience.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for those with some experience of acting and/or clown.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group, pair and individual work.
No work is necessary outside the class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

None, but please come dressed so you are able to move freely and comfortably.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?
