Course outline

What is the course about?

To demystify the audition process.
To help you build a portfolio of suitable audition pieces.
To teach confidence and flexibility in the unnatural acting situation of an audition.

What topics will we cover?

Introduction to the mechanics of auditions, what is expected from an audition and how to provide it.
Nerves, confidence and negativity.
Choice of audition material.
Analysis of text - how to get the meaning and intention out of it.
Acting technique and ways to improve your approach.
Shakespeare text work and performance.

All these topics help you build up a portfolio of useful audition material, with a final presentation by each student of at least one piece to a panel of professionals at the conclusion of the course.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- face a group of unknown people and perform to the best of your ability.
- take apart a Shakespearean speech and find the acting clues in the text.
- appreciate the different styles of acting required for different authors.
- vary the tone, pace and emotional content of a speech.
- present your best qualities at auditions and disguise your weaknesses.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need a basic ability to work and perform from texts and learn speeches.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen actively and communicate clearly.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and analyse scripts to find meaning and clarity.
• Take notes.
• Use numbers to recognise rhythm.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group work, pair work, solo work.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to have learnt one Shakespeare and one modern audition piece before the first class.

You will need: a personal folder for building up your collection of audition pieces, the Complete Shakespeare, access to a library with a good selection of plays (you can join the City Lit library).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. The final lesson is seen by three professional actors who give advice on further training and evaluation of standards.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
