Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will demystify the drama school audition process. It helps you to build a portfolio of suitable audition pieces and teaches you confidence and flexibility in an unnatural acting situation.

What topics will we cover?

• An introduction to thhow auditions work.
• What is expected from an audition and how to provide it.
• Dealing with nerves, confidence and negativity.
• Appropriate choice of audition material.
• Analysis of text - how to create meaning and intention.
• Shakespeare text work / modern styles.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Face a group of unknown people and perform to the best of your ability.
• Take apart a Shakespeare speech and find the acting clues in the text.
• Have an appreciation of the different styles of acting required for different authors.
• Vary the tone, pace and emotional content of a speech.
• Present your best qualities at auditions.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have a basic ability to work and perform from texts and learn speeches.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen actively and communicate clearly.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and analyse scripts to find meaning and clarity.
• Take notes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group work, pair work, solo work.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to have learnt one Shakespeare and one modern audition piece before the first class.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
