This course is a wonderful way to explore some of the best writing in Drama in English from the 20th and 21st Century. We will workshop, analyse, and perform scenes from the plays, and discuss the contemporary issues in their work. Writers include:- Kwame Kwei-Armah, Ayub-Khan Din, Alan Bennett, Caryl Churchill, Michael Frayn, Brian Friel, David Hare, Sarah Kane, David Mamet, Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard, Winsome Pinnock, Timberlake Wertenbaker. We will also visit a current contemporary production.

The study of a broad range of contemporary plays written in English by British, American and Irish Dramatists.
Contemporary drama by British, American and Irish dramatists.
Students will gain a greater knowledge of contemporary drama in English.
Students will gain in confidence in the acting of some scenes from contemporary drama in English.
Students will gain knowledge for analysing and discussing the writing of some leading contemporary dramatists.
The class is aimed at mixed ability, where each student is helped to achieve the highest level that they are capable of.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen actively and communicate clearly.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and analyse scripts to find meaning and clarity.
• Take notes.
• Use numbers to recognise rhythm.
Mostly group and pair work. Also discussions in the group arising from the contemporary issues in the plays, and discussion on all the relevant acting styles. Each course usually involves a visit to a professional contemporary production. Reading of some plays outside the class time will be expected.
Some purchase of certain texts is desirable, but texts can be borrowed from the library. Purchase of Theatre ticket.
