Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will give you the chance to further your knowledge and experience in the art of fighting on stage. A different weapon will be studied each year. Weapons will be chosen from the British Academy of Stage and Screen Combat syllabus, including advanced unarmed combat, advanced rapier and dagger, swashbuckling, knife and 18th century smallsword. A constant emphasis will be placed on how to work in the safest and most controlled manner and there may be the opportunity to take the BASSC Fight Performance Test on the final day. The discipline for 2010/11 will be Advanced Unarmed Combat.

What topics will we cover?

The course is practical with all weapons and instruction provided. The class sessions will be divided into two parts – technique and performance. You will be given the choreography for fight sequences which you will work toward mastering by the end of the course.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Perform a staged fight sequence safely and realistically
Have an awareness of safe technique for rehearsing a stage fight sequence
Realise character, emotion and narrative through the use of body and movement
Communicate physically in performance with confidence and assurance.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge is necessary, although previous stage combat experience is advantageous as this course is designed for people who have already passed a fight test with the BASSC or another recognised stage combat society.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is a practical course where teaching is done by instructor demonstration followed by students working in pairs. A certain amount of physical and mental stamina is required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need sturdy gloves (leather/canvas/suede) and a notebook. You should wear comfortable, non-restrictive clothing and training shoes with a good grip. There is also a nominal charge (currently £15) for those wishing to take the Fight Performance Test.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
