Course outline

What is the course about?

To develop your appreciation and knowledge of poetry, and to introduce you to a number of techniques to help you interpret and perform it.

What topics will we cover?

Looking at the skills necessary ‘to bring the words off the page.’ Finding the rhythms, textures and sounds in the words, lines and verse. Exploring the process involved in preparing a piece for performance. How to bring yourself and emotion to what is written in order to inform your performance.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Connect more to the text so that you can perform poetry with more confidence.
Feel increased self-confidence when speaking in public.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For those with some prior knowledge of poetry, as well as beginners.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Take part in class discussions.
• Read a script and/or related text.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn by doing, through group work, individual work and informal discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
