Course outline

What is the course about?

Acting devising and directing on camera, utilising new technology to show how to make shorts of quality for low budgets.

What topics will we cover?

Acting on camera, improvisation and devising. The basic principles of low budget film-making and it’s relevance to actors and actor/directors.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Act confidently using improvisation in front of the camera.
Have an understanding of the basics of film making.
Be able to work collaboratively with others to make short films for little or no budgets.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Intermediate. Participants should have some experience of devising and improvisation and feel comfortable working without scripts. An understanding of the basics of film making would be helpful although not essential
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently and clearly.
• To read a script accurately.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Take notes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

By working with the tutor and others in the group in collaboration to help produce the short film. The tutor will work in the directors role, overseeing the shoot and directing the students in front of the camera.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Notebook and pen. Personal item to use as a prop (eg a diary, letter, photo).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
