Course outline

What is the course about?

To sharpen your TV presenting skills and explore and develop your talent further, in this advanced level course. This mainly practical course will build on your skills previously learned in the level one course, Find Your Way in TV Presenting, and place you with increased confidence and professionalism, in the driving seat as a TV presenter. Spread over three terms, the course covers all aspects of TV presenting, majoring on developing to a high degree students’ self-confidence, fluency and charismatic engagement in front of camera. In a supportive hands-on studio environment we shall build on existing skills to progress to more challenging presenting techniques, developing each student’s personal presenting “style”, with the final aim of producing an attractive, charismatic and professional on-screen persona. The emphasis will be on practical exercises and 'as live' performance, with regular exposure to studio and on-location conditions and a practical grasp of the basic technologies underlying TV production. ¿You will be expected to prepare exercises to perform each week in advance, with frequent opportunities for positive critique and feedback. Practical exercises will include working in small teams to write, film, present, produce and edit whole mini programmes. Progress will be monitored and recorded on tape or digitally, to provide a documentary record for assessment.

What topics will we cover?

All aspects of TV presenting, including; sight reading scripts and news bulletins, vocal delivery and camera technique, image and appearance, reading from Autocue, scriptwriting and interview techniques, working with microphones, including stand, radio and lapel mikes, using earpieces “live’ on camera, use of props and visual demonstrations, working with children and animals. Some outside filming experience may be provided, including news and features reporting and 'vox pop' street interviews.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Write and present a script to camera, both in studio and on location, confidently, professionally and with personal authority, charisma and style.
Read a news bulletin convincingly, professionally and fluently at sight.
Handle props confidently and professionally in vision.
Receive and respond to instructions via an earpiece “live” on camera, carry out a studio interview sensitively, professionally and convincingly with one or more guests, talk ad lib 'to time', present a professional, attractive and confident persona on screen.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an advanced course for students who are already familiar with television techniques and have successfully completed level one, Find Your Way in TV Presenting, or who have proof of equivalent experience.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
Speak and write English fluently and clearly to a high standard.
To read a script accurately.
Give and receive constructive feedback.
Take notes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In groups, individually and in pairs. Advanced skills training will include voice/movement and sight reading exercises, studio presenting and location filming involving group critique and feedback. There will be an emphasis on group bonding and ensemble work, with the individual benefiting from the support of the whole group.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?
