Course outline

What is the course about?

To improve the quality of your voice for increased confidence in communication. To develop vocal skills and an understanding of how the voice works.

What topics will we cover?

Physical alignment.
Breathing - diaphragmatic, lower abdominal and lower intercostal.
Relaxation techniques, opening the channel for sound, resonating.
Forward placement work.
Jaws, tongue opening throat work.
Vowel work and consonant drills.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Demonstrate an awareness of the body and its effect on the voice.
Demonstrate effective relaxation techniques.
Demonstrate deep breathing/support of sound.
Demonstrate a more powerful voice and richer tone.
Articulate clearly in speech.
Demonstrate vocal confidence and awareness.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Beginners through to experienced students who wish to practice basic exercises that are fundamental to effective voice production.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently.
• Communicate in group situations.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and respond to a range of texts.
• Take course notes for your own use.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group, pair and individual work. You will be taught through tutor explanation, demonstration, feedback and correction, copying, repetition and practice in class and at home. There will be Q&A and occasional homework assignments.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring to every session: water, a notebook and pen, and a folder to file hand-outs and homework. Wear clothes that are comfortable enough to move freely in.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Also, as you acquire your own technique you will quickly be able to assess and correct your own voice production.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
