Course outline

What is the course about?

To develop vocal mastery at a professional level.

What topics will we cover?

Vocal technique - dramatic interpretation of poetry and prose. Appreciation of intonation patterns indigenous in the voices of different characters. We will cover radio, TV and commercial voice-overs, story telling and presenting, and audition preparation, both modern and classical.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Identify a working programme to achieve mastery in the subject.
Diagnose your individual vocal problems.
Refer to and develop a file of vocal exercises and text for daily practice and up-keep.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Some previous voice-work will be necessary. You should be aiming to progress to a semi-professional or professional level.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently.
• Communicate in group situations.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and respond to a range of texts.
• Take course notes for your own use.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group work, pair work, individual work, practical work and homework.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All materials provided by the tutor. The cost of cassettes will be extra if requested by students.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. A personal diagnostic of your vocal problems, and a file of vocal exercises for home practice, is built up from week to week.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

Further studies, more classes at an advanced level, entry to a professional drama school, to achieve work in the media/or maintain it.
