Course outline

What is the course about?

This one-year intensive course is designed to further your existing knowledge, helping you to be multi-skilled and
o demonstrate professional potential in the field of musical theatre. Working individually and as a collaborative
group, you will prepare for the accredited diploma examination ATCL performing (Musical Theatre).
The course is ideal for those thinking of applying for full-time training, giving a real taster of what full-time training requires. It is also useful for those who wish to test their capacity for and commitment to, musical theatre and for those with a particular skill in acting, singing or dance and who wish to improve on other areas working towards becoming a more ‘balanced’ theatre performer. Previous students have gone on to study at ALRA, Mountview, Trinity Laban and various other colleges and universities.

What topics will we cover?

The course will cover all aspects of musical theatre; singing, dancing and acting. We will cover the following each term
Term 1 REPERTORY & PORTFOLIO STUDY, (singing & acting)
Term 2 TECHNIQUE & PERFORMANCE STUDIES, Singing, Acting & Dance)
Term 3 EXAM PREPARATION.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Demonstrate a greater knowledge of the three main disciplines required for musical theatre; singing, dancing and acting
- Prepare, devise and perform your own showcase for the final exam
- Take the ATCL in Musical Theatre as accredited by Trinity Guildhall.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

There are no formal entrance requirements for this qualification. However, you should have studied an aspect of musical theatre or be able to demonstrate potential in two major musical theatre disciplines (singing and acting) and a good level of competency in a third minor discipline (dancing). Private study and research will be required in order to produce a 20 min showcase and detailed programme notes for your final performance exam.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

By fully qualified tutors in two three-hour sessions per week. Research at home will also be required.
Regular attendance and punctuality is essential as a discipline of the professional theatre.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students will require dance clothes and non-slip dance shoes (please feel free to contact the department for advice). The purchase of certain materials e.g. sheet music, a dictaphone, books etc will be necessary for the successful completion of the course although some materials will be available from libraries. The exam fee is included in the cost of the course fees.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. Entry is by audition, which is held once a year during the summer. Please prepare a song (piano accompaniment will be provided) a two minute modern monologue and dress appropriately for dance. Please also bring 2 passport-sized photographs. Please note that there is a non-refundable audition fee of £15. Please call 020 7492 2542 to request an application form and to book an audition.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You should notice your progress over the course and will see your improvement in the disciplines required. The tutors will also give you feedback on your progress and you are always welcome to discuss this progress with the Programme Managers. As well as this, the course culminates in an ATCL in Musical Theatre which in itself will give an indication to your progress and ability. You will attend regular tutorials throughout the course and at the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
