Course outline

What is the course about?

To explore some in depth character work, briefly examine emotional access, engage in some scene work and to freely apply skills already learnt.

What topics will we cover?

Character work, emotional memory, emotional access exercises and, scene work.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Develop an in depth character study.
Create and sustain a physical character during questioning.
Have a broader understanding of emotional access.
Select analyse, rehearse and perform a scene frm a play.
Work collaboratively and supportively within a scene, no matter the size of the role.
Appreciate the need for focus and discipline in the pursuit of the craft of acting.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You must have completed Actors in Training 2 or its equivalent. For experienced actors wishing to renew and /or broaden their skills and for the less experienced, but disciplined, actor, to develop skills, awareness and flexibility of approach.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Communicate clearly in discussion and drama practice.
• Read and respond to a variety of text.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Take notes.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Solo, pairs and in scene groups and group exercises. You will need to put in a lot of preparation, including developing a character and learning lines, at home.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to purchase or photocopy texts you are using for scene work. You will be encouraged to read around the subject of acting as much as possible.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be observation of performance, oral self-assessment and supportive group assessment.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

One year Foundation Course or in exceptional cases the Access Course or any of the Advanced Acting Courses at the City Lit or continue in a full-time drama course.
