Course outline

What is the course about?

The course covers all aspects of stand up comedy, from writing and honing material to performing in front of an audience. The course will also cover how to deal with promoters and begin to get work on the comedy circuit.

What topics will we cover?

Analysing comedy and jokes. Finding material. Writing material. Persona and character work. The business of comedy.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Perform a five-minute stand-up comedy routine.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Due to its intensive nature, the course is most suited to people who already have some experience of performance.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Take part in class discussions.
• Read a script and/or related text.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by example. All the skills taught are skills the tutor uses as a professional stand up.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Writing materials. Admission to comedy clubs.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Thorough feedback from the tutor at every stage of the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
