Course outline

What is the course about?

The aim of the course is to further improve your ability to communicate fluently and effectively in spoken English.

We will continue to focus on how specific changes to the positions of the speech organs will result in a more accurate articulation of ‘problematic’ sounds, and on recognition of the phonetic symbols from the International Phonetics Association.
A high level of commitment is essential to benefit fully from the course.

What topics will we cover?

Revision of ‘challenging’ simple vowel and consonant sounds.
Detailed study of the articulation of diphthongs and associated triphthongs.
Reduction in grammatical words (use of strong/ weak form) as part of revision of the neutral vowel.
Word-stress and sentence-stress, rhythm, sense and breath groupings, intonation and fluency.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Be easily understood when communicating with native English speakers by using sentence-stress effectively.
Demonstrate intention and attitude through the use of appropriate intonation patterns.
Demonstrate fluency through the correct application of the weak form of grammatical words.
Identify those compound vowel sounds of Standard English/RP (received pronunciation) which are problematic for you.
Articulate your ‘problematic’ sounds – both diphthongs and associated triphthongs – with accuracy.
Recognise all the phonetic symbols from the international phonetic alphabet relevant to English, and apply this knowledge when using an English pronunciation (phonetic) dictionary.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for you if you have completed English Pronunciation Stage 1 at this college. You may also enrol if you can distinguish between long and short vowel sounds, and have a thorough knowledge of Phonetics. You must be able to speak English fluently, communicate in group situations and be prepared to act upon constructive feedback.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently.
• Communicate in group situations.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and respond to a range of texts.
• Take course notes for your own use.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The articulation process of each sound is explained and demonstrated by the tutor.
Diphthongs and associated triphthongs are practised through repetition of words containing these sounds – both group and individual work. Repetition of sentences based on each sound – and also contrasting specific sounds.
Periodic additional exercises/tests to promote ear-training and encourage recognition of the phonetic
symbols. Prepared readings of both set texts and students’ own choice.
It is expected that you will spend an average of two hours per week studying and preparing material at home.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Students use the same course notes/hand-outs as for Stage 1, plus additional material supplied by the tutor. You need to provide a folder to keep the handouts; pen and paper and a hand mirror.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Every student is heard individually during each session of the course and given immediate oral feedback on the accuracy of her/his articulation of the specific sounds studied (or revised) that week.

Preparatory work is set each week to help you learn the additional phonetic symbols and their related ‘spelling to sound’ study. A short word transcription test is set at intervals so you can practise the phonetic symbols and their 'spelling-to-sound' study, and you will be asked to transcribe several short passages. (Optional). A number of literary items, varying in style and content, will be presented during the course as prepared readings, and each student will receive immediate oral feedback from the tutor.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can progress to English Pronunciation Stage 3 for further practice, if you and your tutor feel you are ready. (If you are not sure, please seek your tutor’s advice.)

Alternatively, you could attend Voice, Fluency & Self-presentation for Speakers of Other Languages – in order to continue to practise your improved pronunciation skills, and to acquire still greater fluency in English. Seek your tutor’s advice.
