Course outline

What is the course about?

To ‘fine tune’ your articulation of ‘problematic’ vowel and consonant sounds still closer to standard English/RP (received pronunciation). You will improve your ability to communicate fluently and expressively in spoken English. A high level of commitment is essential.

What topics will we cover?

Prepared readings and presentations, improvised conversations and role-play. Any elements of Standard English/RP covered in Stages 1 and 2 which need revision will be dealt with as they arise. Revision of ‘challenging’ vowel and consonant sounds.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Interact fluently and confidently with native English speakers.
Demonstrate intention and attitude effectively and expressively through the use of appropriate Intonation patterns.
Demonstrate fluency through the correct application of the Weak form of grammatical words.
Articulate your ‘challenging’ sounds – both Vowels and Consonants – with accuracy.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should be able to communicate fluently and freely in English, should probably have completed Stages 1
and 2 at City Lit and be able to use an English pronunciation (phonetic) dictionary effectively.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently.
• Communicate in group situations.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and respond to a range of texts.
• Take course notes for your own use.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Individual presentations of prepared literary items and improvised conversations and role-play is followed immediately by oral feedback. The articulation process of any sound (vowel or consonant) selected for revision is practised through specific sounds. (Group, pair and individual work). Short transcription tests are set to facilitate your application of the phonetic symbols and your ‘spelling-to-sound’ progress. You will be expected to study and prepare for class for an average of two hours per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will use your course notes/hand-outs from Stages 1 and 2. Additional material/hand-outs may be supplied by the tutor.
Please bring a small hand-mirror; a pen/pencil and note-book/sheets of A4 paper.
As the preparation of a variety of literary items is required, membership of the City Lit library is recommended.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Each week every student has the opportunity to present a prepared reading, make a short presentation, speak spontaneously, or take part in role-play, and receives immediate oral feedback from both the tutor and from fellow students on various aspects of her/his performance, so that individual student progress is continuously monitored and assessed throughout the course.

You could attend ‘Voice, Fluency & Self-presentation for Speakers of Other Languages’ and/or Technical Voice ESOL– in order to continue to practise your improved pronunciation skills, and to acquire still greater fluency in English.
