Course outline

What is the course about?

Using the singing voice in a theatrical context. Presenting a song and audition technique. Singing duets and choruses. There will be an evening performance.

Singing technique
Solo singing
Presentation techniques
Singing duets
Singing choruses
Audition technique
Repertoire building.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Present two audition songs to a polished standard.
Participate in the performance of a duet and a chorus.
Work through a warm up procedure.
Construct the performance of a song.
Use appropriate vocal qualities.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For professionals in theatre with some experience in singing.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently and clearly and make sense of song texts.
• Listen to and accept constructive feedback from the tutor.
• Use numbers to recognise rhythm.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Most of the time in masterclass format; some of the time class teaching. Students choose their own material.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Sheet music and recordings. Please bring the sheet music for a selection of songs for the first class if you have it.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
