Course outline

What is the course about?

To have an enjoyable and involved experience of jazz dance and exercise. Drawing from traditional jazz, each class will build weekly, or at the class pace, working towards a set routine at the end of the term. Our aim is to have a greater awareness of the body, improved technique and an appreciation of jazz dance and its varied styles and techniques.

What topics will we cover?

A physical body and mind warm-up, focusing on stretching and warming of the muscles for flexibility, leading to an anatomical awareness of the body.
Floor exercises to strengthen and tone muscles, and breathing techniques.
Step combinations across the floor, introducing the use of dance steps and enabling you to exercise the mind for retaining movement and an awareness of the style.
Exploring and practising dance dynamics, co-ordination, musicality and performance.
Dance combinations created to jazz music for you to improve technique and build awareness of the style, rhythms and syncopation.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Have a greater awareness and appreciation of jazz dance and music.
Have a greater awareness of the body, flexibility and strength with an understanding of co-ordination and the mental dexterity needed for dance and movement.
Have increased technique, focus and knowledge.
Perform from memory a set routine.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
