To have an enjoyable and involved experience of jazz dance and exercise. Drawing from traditional jazz, each class will build weekly, or at the class pace, working towards a set routine at the end of the term. Our aim is to have a greater awareness of the body, improved technique and an appreciation of jazz dance and its varied styles and techniques.
A physical body and mind warm-up, focusing on stretching and warming of the muscles for flexibility, leading to an anatomical awareness of the body.
Floor exercises to strengthen and tone muscles, and breathing techniques.
Step combinations across the floor, introducing the use of dance steps and enabling you to exercise the mind for retaining movement and an awareness of the style.
Exploring and practising dance dynamics, co-ordination, musicality and performance.
Dance combinations created to jazz music for you to improve technique and build awareness of the style, rhythms and syncopation.
Have a greater awareness and appreciation of jazz dance and music.
Have a greater awareness of the body, flexibility and strength with an understanding of co-ordination and the mental dexterity needed for dance and movement.
Have increased technique, focus and knowledge.
Perform from memory a set routine.
For those who have had some training and experience in dance and movement and wish to broaden their dance vocabulary.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions.
• Use numbers to recognise musical phrasing within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.
A practical class working as a group and in pairs.
The correct dance wear e.g. dance leotards, jazz pants, sports wear, jazz shoes, trainers. There are many dance wear shops situated in and around Covent Garden.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your general well being and an awareness of your energy and ability. Quicker response to learning exercises and dance combinations, more at ease with your own body and flexibility of movement. More confidence to assert yourself within a class setting.
