Course outline

What is the course about?

You will have the opportunity to develop and practise your own individual dance style, as well as extending your vocabulary of tap steps, timesteps and sequences. You will further your understanding of rhythm, tempo and syncopation and learn a fun routine which reflects these new tap moves.

What topics will we cover?

We will explore the fascinating area of timesteps choreography with emphasis on their rhythm structure. You will learn classic timesteps of renowned tap legends such as Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson, Eleanor Powell, Arthur Duncan and Gregory Hines. We will also explore a variety of rhythm structures, tempos and syncopation. As the course progresses you will be encouraged to perform individually and within your group.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Understand the structure of time step chorography.
Perform several unique modern timesteps/sequences.
Perform several classic time steps by tap masters.
Have a greater understanding of tap styles, rhythms and syncopation.
Perform a fun and challenging routine.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable to students who have completed the Stages 1 and 2 or who have some previous basic tap experience.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions.
• Use numbers to recognise musical phrasing within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In a group and through individual tuition.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

It is essential to have good shoes and tap shoes are necessary for this class. Having the correct shoes can really improve your technique and give you a much better feeling for the style of dance. The tap shoes should be fitted with tap plates using screw fittings (no rivets). Specialised stockists such as Gamba, Freed and Dancia, which have outlets in and around Covent Garden can provide appropriate footwear. Clothing should be comfortable and loose.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Students are assessed at each lesson individually and as a group. Assessment is based on students ability to complete the lesson plan of the day (i.e. ability to perform given steps and each new sequence of the routine). Flair, style and confidence are assessed with performance in mind.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You are encouraged to attend intermediate and advanced tap classes.
