Course outline

What is the course about?

The course offers an opportunity to extend and develop the approaches you can use as an actor when working with text.

What topics will we cover?

To explore in even greater depth a variety of texts, some of one's own choosing, and to stage in the classroom space a longer scenes and/or audition piece if preferred, requiring in-depth rehearsal. A major requirement will be what you, the actor, bring to the character, and therefore the rehearsal. This will involve considerable homework, outside preparation and thought. We will continue to use and explore exercises already used in Ways Into Text 1, including physical and vocal warm-ups.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Have some sense of developing in depth character study.
Appreciate the need to make adjustments, physical, vocal and mental in order to interpret a character from a scene or monologue.
Select, analyse, rehearse and perform a scene from a play.
Use appropriate exercises to help unlock the life and energy of a specific text.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for people who have completed Ways into Text 1 or other related courses.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Communicate clearly in discussion and drama practice.
• Read and respond to a variety of text.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Take notes.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group, pair and solo work - all practically based. Line learning will be required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to buy (or borrow from a library) the play you select a scene or monologue from.
You will need to bring a pen and paper and bring copies of handouts received during the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will be given many opportunities during the course to give and receive feedback.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
