Course outline

What is the course about?

The course offers an opportunity to explore a variety of styles of approaches to acting.

What topics will we cover?

An introduction to improvisation to identify and test out a basic actor 'tool kit' for creating scenes.
The development of discovered acting skills to interpret some dramatic text.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Appreciate and use an understanding of the principles of core elements of acting.
Use ‘Given Circumstances’ (environment, character and objectives) to improvise and explore text.
Activate your acting choices to create spontaneity, emotion and connection to other actors.
Prepare and present improvised and scripted scenes using given circumstances.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Beginners.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Take part in class discussions.
• Read a script and/or related text.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In a fun, friendly and supportive environment, using simple and specific tasks and instructions. Games, exercises and some presentations and observations within the class. Working individually, in pairs and small groups.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

It is recommended that you buy or borrow from the library an Acting technique book; a list of suggestions will be provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will be given many opportunities during the course to give and receive feedback.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; study support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
