Course outline

What is the course about?

Exploring the various aspects of magic from a complete beginner's view point, including manual dexterity, sleight of hand, theory in misdirection, psychology, building patter and scripting, performance technique using acting skills, and how to entertain people with magic.

What topics will we cover?

Cards, coins, ropes and balls will be taught, with some extra moves dependent on your progress. There is room for requests on themed classes on a specific subject e.g children’s magic. As this is a workshop-based class, questions are encouraged.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Master the four disciplines as listed with confidence.
Perform tricks using the four outlined principles, with a view to expanding the tricks into routines.
Have the confidence to stand in front of any audience and use the tricks and principles as a tool to entertain.
Entertain with knowledge of basic stage craft techniques.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge of magic is necessary, though some performance experience (i.e. acting, clowning) is an advantage. Those with experience are welcome, indeed professionals who wish to brush up on skills not used for a while sometimes join the class.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Take part in class discussions.
• Read a script and/or related text.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The various aspects of magic will be demonstrated, followed by pair work, group work and individual attention. Members of the class will be asked to demonstrate an effect followed by group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A handful of coins for the first day. Basic equipment will be required which will be explained in full later, the cost should be no more than £10.00.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. On-going feedback during the course, individual feed-back, the ability of the students to perform the taught tricks by the end of the course.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
