Course outline

What is the course about?

The principle aims of the course are to develop a sound working knowledge of the new comedy circuit and to produce appropriate material.
At the start the idea of becoming a professional stand-up may seem a little out of reach but the fact that you’re considering it probably means that you believe that you have the potential. Of course not every student who participates goes on to get paid work but most of the people who have completed previous courses now possess the skills to make a room full of people laugh. Several ex-students have gone on to do extremely well; winning various high profile comedy competitions and a fair few now regularly headline at major venues.
Make no mistake this course does require a fair amount of hard work but it can also be hugely enjoyable. If however, you think that it’s just going to be a bit of a laugh then it’s probably not for you.

What topics will we cover?

Material - how to construct a set. Performing your set - dealing with hecklers, dying, mikes etc.
Getting started/getting work - the clubs and the bookers. Developing as a stand-up.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- understand how to develop stand-up comedy material for use on the new comedy circuit.
- understand how to get into stand-up comedy, and how to establish your career.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Beginners.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Take part in class discussions.
• Read a script and/or related text.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group/pair work. Lecture. Visiting cabaret clubs (outside course hours). A lot of practical work. Demonstrations.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A dictaphone becomes essential eventually. There are some useful books on my subject that can be borrowed from the library or bought.
( I encourage students to split/share costs wherever possible).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Feedback is given in class by fellow students and tutor on work produced in class. Self-assessment forms are used throughout course for students to assess their progress each week and are given in every couple of weeks so that the tutor can give individual feedback on progress and problems to each student in a written form. Student targets are set on the personal assessment forms for work in-between each class with the option for students to set their own student targets.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
