Helping the actor learn and refine skills needed to master new accents.
A range of commonly used accents, including received pronunciation (contemporary BBC English), general American, London, West Yorkshire, Liverpool and Bristol. (One of these may be dropped according to class progress.).
Have a basic knowledge of phonetics and how this can be applied to accent study.
Use a number of new accents confidently.
Recognise habitual use of your own accent and changes needed to learn new accents.
Use the skills acquired to tackle any accent required in your professional life.
Beginners and intermediate level. You will be expected to show some evidence of acting skills and/ or training.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen actively and communicate clearly.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and analyse scripts to find meaning and clarity.
• Take notes.
• Use numbers to recognise rhythm.
Theory and practice, including detailed breakdown and analysis of each accent, including phonetics. (Some prior knowledge of phonetics is useful but not essential.) Exercises to explore physicalisation, and to compare your own and other accents. Each accent will be applied to relevant text. In order to progress, you should practise between classes and conduct your own research.
Please bring a pen and paper, a mirror and a recording device. Notes are provided. Recommendations for books and other resources for further study will given by the tutor if requested.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
