Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is an introduction to the Alexander technique in general, and focuses specifically how it can be applied to help the actor and performing artist to transform the quality of the ‘action’, gain more control of breathing, and enhance freedom of movement and stage presence. The technique is concerned with how a person uses themselves i.e. not how they use specific parts of the body or voice but how they apply themselves as a whole mind/body in everything they do.

What topics will we cover?

We will explore the basics of the Alexander technique through a range of practical procedures. You will become aware of, and unlearn, habits of misuse that show up as tension, restricting freedom of movement, breathing, voice and coordination.

Procedures will include lying down work, sitting and standing, walking, voice work and breathing. Topics include ‘centering and grounding’, spatial awareness, balance, co-ordination, ‘stage fright’, developing powers of observation and focusing. Some anatomy and physiology will be introduced where applicable.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- understand the Alexander principle that the way you 'use' yourself influences how you function in everyday life as well as in performance;
- describe the experience of how conscious direction of your use can eliminate tension habits that interfere with movement and breathing, and understand how this can help free you towards full expression in performance;
- recognise a number of patterns of posture and movement – specifically pulling the head back – which may be causing excessive tension, aches and pains, shallow breathing, restricted movement and stiff joints.
- recognise the relationship between overall coordination and efficient breathing;
- practise the Alexander technique in the classic semi-supine lying-down position.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for actors, performers of all kinds and levels and those wishing to train in performance arts. The course is suitable for complete beginners in the Alexander Technique, as well as a refresher for people with previous experience and as a compendium to someone having one-to-one lessons.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen actively and communicate clearly.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and analyse scripts to find meaning and clarity.
• Take notes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The Alexander technique is a practical method which involves the students’ participation through direct hands-on work from the tutor, self-observation, and students’ observation of each other. We will work in small groups and pairs involving interactive games and application to everyday activities.

There will be observation and individual hands-on instruction applied to voice production and performance situations. The tutor will also have volunteer teaching assistants for extra hands-on work. You will be given course handouts and be expected to apply what you learn between classes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Because of the nature of this course there are no examinations, material or extra costs. However, you are asked to wear loose comfortable clothing. Suggested reading: 'The Voice Book' by Michael McCallion; 'Bodylearning' by Michael Gelb; 'Use of the Self' by F.M. Alexander; 'Mind and Muscle' an owners handbook by Elizabeth Langford; Body, Breath & Being by Carolyn Nicholls.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Students are invited, and expected, to share and exchange feedback at all times.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
