Course outline

What is the course about?

A chance for you to choose a piece for your first auditions. Whether for other courses at City Lit, for productions on the fringe or for short films, having an audition piece that you have made your own will be a huge advantage. This course will take you through the process of getting to know your piece, learning it and being able to play it in various ways according to what a director may suggest.

What topics will we cover?

Finding the right piece to suit you.
Improvisation of piece to explore its content.
The seven Stanislavski questions.
How best to memorise your piece.
Delivery of your piece - (Where to put eye-line, who am I addressing? etc )
Presentation of piece (the first impression, the chat!).

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Perform as an audition piece a solo speech or monologue with integrity.
Explore character in depth.
Experiment with movement and improve vocal clarity.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For beginners, or those who have done an introductory course in acting.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Communicate clearly in discussion and drama practice.
• Read and respond to a variety of text.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Take notes.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In large group, small groups, pairs and one to ones.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No - However you may wish to find you own piece to work on, in which case you will have minimal costs.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be feedback from the tutor and the group throughout the class and self-assessment.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Armed with a good audition piece you can apply to do the various courses requiring you to perform in order to secure a place.
