Course outline

What is the course about?

To develop the skills required to organise and communicate ideas in a clear, distinctive manner and compelling way.
To build the confidence needed to achieve a positive response.
To enhance personal credibility and impact on others.

What topics will we cover?

Planning your message for maximum success.
The art of influencing; overcoming resistance and objections.
Winning with words; choosing your style.
Motivating and inspiring.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Choose an appropriate plan and goal for a persuasive message.
Build rapport with an audience - groups or individuals.
Convince and inspire your audience.
Choose a suitable style for yourself.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students whose first language is not English will need to be fully competent in speaking, reading and writing in English.
• Speak English fluently.
• Communicate in group situations.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and respond to a range of texts.
• Take course notes for your own use.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will comprise talks, discussion, demonstrations and practice in structuring and delivering a persuasive message. During the course, participants will have the opportunity to work on their own Presentations.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All materials are devised and produced by the tutor.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. There will be regular on-going feedback from the tutor. There will be time for students to discuss their progress individually.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
