An unexpectedly varied course looking at the many aspects of public speaking

I wanted to get better at business presentations, but we looked at much more than this; an array of texts, famous speeches, dramatic pauses, breathing, movement, practice and so on. The varied content provided a lot of food for thought and really informed my view of speaking in public. [The tutor's] great sense of humour and anecdotes really helped too!

I am not a fan of public speaking, and in fact dreaded the idea of having to do any of it at work. After 12 weeks of constant practice and group feedback I believe I have improved a lot. I will never enjoy doing it, but I know I will be able to do it with confidence. The facilitator was excellent and very honest!

If, like me, you dread public speaking, then I can recommend this course. Although it was challenging to be preparing and presenting a short talk every week, the tutor created a relaxing and supportive atmosphere, which is just what you need when you're out of your comfort zone. He knew his stuff and because he's a performer, was very good at modelling what was required. Those of us who stuck at it really improved and, against all the odds, enjoyed ourselves. I'm going to miss Monday afternoons at City Lit. It's just a shame there isn't a follow up course because, to fight off the nerves, public speaking is the kind of thing you want to keep going with.
