Course outline

What is the course about?

The aim of this course is to explore how grammar can be used to communicate more effectively.

What topics will we cover?

We will select from a range of grammar topics depending on the needs of the group. Topics could include tense and aspect, conditionals, passive voice, modal verbs and reported speech. We will also work on vocabulary, and discuss effective ways of studying outside the class.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Apply the grammar covered on the course to express yourself accurately and confidently.
Identify areas of your English that can be improved.
Devise strategies for making progress in these areas.
Communicate effectively with new vocabulary.
Write an accurate, well-structured paragraph on a range of topics.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should be fairly advanced speakers of English (levels B2 / C1by the Common European Framework of Reference; level 2 or above by the National Qualifications Framework; approximately Cambridge CAE and above). Students should be able to take part in authentic conversations of some length and complexity and to understand authentic texts with ease.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will have opportunities to test your understanding of grammar and increase your accuracy through grammar exercises, speaking activities, and writing tasks. Classes will consist of short presentations from your tutor, pair and group work, and class discussion. You will be expected to do some written homework each week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Handouts will be provided by the tutor. No books are required for the course, but we would recommend you have an advanced grammar reference (e.g. Cambridge Advanced Grammar in Use).

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions. To be assessed for this course please come along to a Humanities drop-in-advice session. These take place as follows:
Term time
Mondays and Thursdays 12.30-13.30 and 17.30-18.30
Non term time
Mondays 17.30-18.30
Thursdays 12.30-13.30.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will receive regular informal feedback in class, and feedback on any homework you submit. At the end of the course your tutor will help you assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Your tutor will advise you what course to do next. Depending on the progress you make, he/she may advise you to continue with Grammar in Practice Stage 2. Other courses include Writing Skills for Speakers of Other Languages, Writing Good English, Essay Writing and Study Skills, Business English, ESOL through Journalism, and English Pronunciation for Speakers of Other Languages (Drama department).
